Met Rwandan actress Carole Karemera in Hargeisa in 2018 and recorded a clip from a panel conversation at the book fair.

She was explaining how she dealt with her post-genocide bitterness by observing a widow who had chosen to adopt the murderer of her own children. Carole had suspected that the widow, who was caring for and taking food to the killer in prison, was planning to poison him someday, to see him suffer and die.

The truth changed Carole: the mother ‘could not accept that the love she had for her children would die with them, and the one who needs it most [was] the young boy that killed her children.’

Not sure I can rise to this level of love. Can you?
