the mourning after… (click to listen)
(…the end of the 3-day national mourning for the DANA Dead)

stripe me green and white and
green again, these 3 black
days of grief. strip me
of every other
human
hue

– but these two shades of hope. trip
me up history’s nostalgia hill,
the independence day
of old, and rip this
very unNigerian
despair from
our hearts
today.
for
we
have
not buried
our compatriots,
no. we have planted hope.

163
died in
Iju Hills, lied
the newspapers,
for while we live, our
dead live on in memory as well

3
days
to weep
and fly the
flag at half-mast,
ruled the state. but
for 3 decades we’ll rue
these souls. they left Abuja
& missing Lagos, made heaven
